First United Methodist Church Fort Worth

Yesterday was a wonderful day. It’s always a wonderful day when I get new camera gear! I drove over to Fort Worth Camera because I needed some a new tripod and head for my developing addiction to HDR photography. So my wife and I headed up to the store with my camera to try out all the different options. I ended up getting a Bogen/Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod legs and a Manfrotto 322RC2 tripod head. This combination is great for HDR, portraits, weddings, low light conditions, and travel. The legs are light and the grip handle head makes it a breeze switching from landscape to portrait, as well as any adjustments you need to make for a level shot. No nobs to tighten or loosen, just squeeze the handle and do what the shot calls for. I took my Canon 5d Mark II along with my Canon 24-70 2.8L to try this combo out because this is close to the maximum amount of weight I will put on the tripod head. I couldn’t be happier with the way it handled that much weight!

So we were driving home and we spotting this amazing gothic stlye church, the First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth. The church was founded in 1874 but this building wasn’t built until 1930. We walked in, got permission to take some pictures and here are the shots I got.

THE INCOMING TIDE AT CAMBRIA

This place was amazing! We stopped here by accident while looking for the elephant seals which happened to be in San Simeon. The tide pools at Cambria were teaming with life. There were crabs, sea urchins, snails, star fish and all kinds of things I can’t spell or pronounce. About 15 minutes before I took this shot there was no water around these rocks, we were able to walk around freely. And in hindsight (which is always 20/20 for me) I probably ventured out way too far from the shore. The tides started coming in quickly and before running back to the shore I set up as low as I could get to take this picture. The image is a single image HDR from a RAW file. I set my focus to infinity, ISO at 400 and my aperture to f/11. I then dialed my shutter speed until 1/400 of a second showed the correct exposure. Finally, I ran an HDR Post Processing treatment to get this image.

GOTTA LOVE MONDAYS

Today is the Monday after Christmas. It still feels like the holidays with New Years around the corner, but it also feels like it’s time to really get to work. Kinda weird! Today I will lock myself in the office to plan for next year. I can’t wait for what next year is going to hold, and planning my marketing campaigns is probably one of my favorite things to do ever! Make sure to check my blog and website on a daily basis! From here on out I will do my absolute best to update it daily. Some days it will be sample HDR photo’s that I have been working on, others it will be highlights from photo shoots I have done recently, but coming soon I will be having contests and promotions where you can win prizes and photo sessions for spreading the word about James Brandon Photography. Stay tuned!

THE CHRISTMAS TREE OF YOUR DREAMS

I took this picture yesterday. My wife’s family is making their way in town for her sister Stephanie’s wedding in January. So I will be spending quite a bit of time over there for the next few weeks. Yesterday we were getting ready to leave for dinner and I started staring at the Christmas tree. Ideas immediately started stirring in my mind for a photo. I wanted the image to be timeless, this involved removing objects from the scene like the automatic lighter, the starter logs, the lighter gel, magazines, a dog kennel, etc. I set up my tripod and remote shutter and fired away. The main image was taken at f/7.1 for 1 second at ISO 100. The treatment on the photo is obviously HDR (High Dynamic Range) which is a process where three images taken from -2 to +2 and then run through extensive post processing to gather all the available light in every image. I wanted the image to look like a dream. Christmas Tree’s bring back so many childhood memories for me, and when you see a Christmas Tree you immediately judge it. Why do we do this? Because when we see an amazing Christmas Tree we aren’t just seeing that one. We are seeing every Christmas tree we have ever seen in our lives. And when you see one that looks like this, everything comes together. When our eyes scan a subject like this, our brains immediately start taking everything in. It molds and intertwines the image with memories from the past. The same thing happens when you smell something that instantly shoots your mind back to some event from the past. And to me HDR is really how we remember events and images. We remember the details, and we remember them in romantic and inspirational ways, so a standard photograph just wouldn’t do here. My goal for these images are to start conversations around them. So please feel free to comment. Comment on the image itself, or on the content of this paragraph. What smells, tastes, feelings, sounds or images bring up memories from your childhood? I know when I smell the smoke from a neighbor grilling, it instantly sends me back to memories of my Dad cooking on the grill. He was and is a master of the grill and I remember so many details about helping him start the fires on his charcoal grill and even better, the smoker we had in the backyard from his father. Thank for reading and hope to hear some great memories from everyone! And for more information on HDR and the HDR process, check out Stuck In Customs, a blog by Trey Ratcliff. He is an amazing HDR photographer and even has a fee HDR Tutorial for anyone wanting to learn the process.

THE CARNIVAL FANTASY AT SEA

Have you ever been on a cruise? They are, in my humble opinion, one of the best ways to see the world. How else are you able to see multiple destinations, in multiple countries, in a matter of 4-7 days without spending a fortune on flights and hotel reservations? The only problem is that you only get to spend a day at each location. Regardless, I have been able to see a lot of places I probably wouldn’t have otherwise, because of the convenience of cruising. This one went to Cozumel and Progresso. Progresso is a shanty town, but a two hour bus ride later you arrive at some amazing Myan ruins. We visited Uxmal, I may post some of those later. The shot below was just a snapshot I took of the Carnival Fantasy in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. This image is a single RAW HDR and I just liked the way it turned out. Hope you enjoy!

A WHITE CHRISTMAS….IN TEXAS

The last couple days have been very interesting here in Texas. I have lived here all 24 years of my life. Usually, it is a good 70-85 degrees on any Christmas day. But for the first time in my entire life, we had a white Christmas! We really didn’t know what to do with ourselves! Texans really have no clue how to handle extreme weather. Any time there is mention of snow or ice, everything shuts down. The schools, small businesses, etc, all out of commission. And forget driving! On our 45 minute drive to my Nana’s (my Dad’s mom) house, my wife and I counted 18 cars in ditches, on the side of the road dead, buried in mud and snow, or laying on their side. I had to pass nearly 20 or so people driving on the highway at 30 mph even after most of the ice was gone! Besides the people who ended up in ditches, Christmas day was a blast! We had actual snow, and not just any snow, POWDER! I just wish I had some skis because I definitely would have found a hill or something!

DAILY EXPOSURE – PETRIFIED WOOD STATION | DECATUR, TEXAS

My Dad’s side of the family is all from Decatur, and I have always been enthralled with this old gas station. If you look off to the left, that building behind the gas station (the motor courts) are apparently a place Bonnie and Clyde once used to evade capture a couple weeks before they were killed. The gas station was built in 1927 and closed in 1989. But the current owners restored it to it’s old charm and now it sits there, becoming more and more appealing to the eye every time I see it. I believe some of the motor courts are used as offices now but that’s all I know. Enjoy!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE AND WHY BRIAN MCKNIGHT IS DUMB TO ME

I can’t believe how fast this year has gone by! So much has happened in this short amount of time and I can’t believe 2010 is right around the corner! Here is what was on my mind the moment I woke up this morning:

In Brian McKnight’s song, “You’re Like a Dream Come True,” he lists 5 very important steps to make a certain person fall in love with him. As these steps lingered and danced around in my mind, I quickly realized one thing: This song is crap. Step one simply says that this person he is after is like a dream come true. That is not a step! There is no action to take! Let us move on to step two: Just wanna be with you. Again, not a step. Not something you DO. He could have simply said, “Spend time with you” and I would have let that one go. 3. Girl it’s plain to see that you’re the only one for me. Wow, three strikes McKnight. You’re officially failblog worthy in my book. And if it couldn’t get any worse step 4 states that you repeat steps 1 through 3, which we have already determined are not steps at all. The only one that tells us to do something is step 5 and all it says is, “Make you fall in love with me.” That’s a completely blanket statement and steps 1-4 certainly don’t elaborate on any of them. And then as if to take the entire chorus, hold it in his hands and destroy and crush it like Chris Farley’s “sale” in Tommy Boy, he says that if his work is ever done, simply start back at one. I’m speechless. How did this song ever become a hit!? Anyways, that is what I woke up to. Now that I have gotten out of my head and had a cup of coffee, I am good to go. It’s Christmas eve, the day before my absolute favorite day of the year. It’s also my Dads birthday, Happy Birthday Dad! Today is a day to slow down, spend time with family, and maybe open a present when nobody is looking. We will see.

DAILY EXPOSURE – SANTA BARBARA BOAT HOUSE

I took this image while passing through Santa Barbara on the way to San Luis Obispo in California. One of my all time favorite photographers is Chris Orwig who resides and teaches in Santa Barbara at the Brook’s Institute of Photography. He is an amazing teacher and I have learned a LOT of what I know in Photoshop and Lightroom from this guy. His lessons are available at Lynda.com so check them out if you want to learn. Anyways, I had to stop by because he always talks about how beautiful it is. And he was right! If I could afford it in any way, I would be there in a second. This boat house is just one of hundreds of pictures I took that day. The Santa Barbara Pier is just breathtaking. So much beauty, I could have spent all day walking around. I processed this photo as a single RAW HDR image. As long as you have the RAW file, you can still make HDR’s without having to take three different exposures. Enjoy! And anyone reading, leave a comment stating your number one Christmas wish!

A NEW BEGINNING

So I have been getting a lot of heat lately about not updating my blog enough. These past 6 months have been an incredibly interesting and testing time in my life. 6 months ago I was a full time personal banker at Bank of America Corporation. I was very successful in my position there, always hit my numbers and over the course of a few years, built up a very dedicated group of clients. But something big was missing: Freedom! With only 3 weeks of vacation a year, and 40+ hours a week every week I couldn’t possibly make this photography business work. So over the next few months I started working my tail off at getting to a professional level of work with my photography. I was blessed to have the help of a great photographer, Monyeen Black. I met her in California at a wedding for my wife’s cousin and she couldn’t have been more helpful. She stayed in touch, critiqued my work with brutal honesty (the best kind), suggested reading material, lenses etc. Monyeen, if you read this, thank you so much for all of your help along the way. Your generosity was inspiring!

With the help and support of friends and family, and especially my amazing and beautiful wife Kristin, I began immersing myself into the art of photography. I bought books, talked to other photographers, took hundreds of hours of training online in photoshop and lightroom, and developed a very intimate knowledge of how to make high quality, memorable, inspiring images. The greatest thing is that I will never be done! I haven’t arrived yet, and photographers know we never will. The industry is ever changing, new forms are being invented often, and there is always room to get better and learn new things. My goal is always be a beginner at heart. The moment we don’t allow ourselves to learn new things is the moment our work becomes obsolete.

The reason I’m writing this is to announce that as of this week, I am a full time photographer! This is my main business now! My primary source of income for my wife and I! God has blessed this process the entire way. He opened and closed the doors that led me to where I am now. He has left me in awe over the things He has done to make this possible. Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way! Primarily my incredible wife, Kristin. Babe, you have been a constant source of support for me and I cannot describe in words how much I love you! You inspire me, you challenge me, you stand by me, and you trust me. There is not another person in this world that I could love as much as I love you, and not another person in this world that would put up with me! You are my better half, my best friend and I couldn’t be more blessed than to have you by my side ;-)

My clients are amazing and I love that in photography I can develop such amazing relationships with the people I work with. You guys are everything to me, and there is no better way to help me than to tell others about me! Help me get the word out! If you would like more information on my work, please check my portfolio by clicking here. This next year is going to be very interesting and I can’t wait to see what it has in store! Again, help me by telling others I’m here! There are a lot of photographers out there and it takes time to build up a constant stream of customers. I can’t do it without you! Follow me on twitter (@jamesdbrandon) for updates along the way. God bless and have a wonderful Christmas everyone!

I am going to make a promise to everyone. I will do everything I can to update my blog at least once a day. Sometimes I will fail, if I’m out of town or can’t make it to a computer. But at the very worst I will update it 3-4 times a week. Primarily, I will have a daily picture, these will mostly be travel pictures, images I have done extensive work on or pictures of my daily life. This will keep me taking pictures and taking them often. But I will also post multiple pictures anytime I shoot a wedding, a family, etc. So check the blog, check it often, and so I know people are reading it, leave comments! Tell me what you like about the images I share with you! I put a lot of work into these photos and the greatest thing I can get is feedback on them! So, here is todays photo, enjoy!
