Newsletter Coming

I finally got around to setting up a newsletter just for fans of the blog. If you’ll take a look at the sidebar on the right, you will see a new box there where you can sign up for it. The newsletter is and always will be free, and I will send it out as time permits, or when anything big is happening. If I release a product or contest, newsletter subscribers will find out first. I will also include interesting things I find here and there that I don’t always get a chance to post to the blog. Sign up now! And don’t worry, we will never sell your information or use it in any way besides the newsletter mailings.

Magical Psychedelic Shrooms

Can you imagine seeing mushrooms like this in the wild!? I’m not sure what I would do, but I can tell you I’d be a little concerned with their…well…effects. I found these little gems at the Gaylor Texan Hotel and Resort in Grapevine, Texas. The hotel basically wraps around a giant, indoor theme park with restaurants and bars and games. The whole place seems to be modeled after Alice in Wonderland, and there are little magical things like this at every turn.

Artist Spotlight Series

Big announcement! My dream for this blog is that it will be a sort of hub for creative minds to come and learn new things, discover new people, find inspiration for their own work, and the like. In the next little while, I will be launching a new series of blog posts called the Artist Spotlight Series. These posts, given weekly or monthly (haven't decided yet), will feature creative artists from around DFW, around the US, and even the world. While this blog leans towards photography, I will also be featuring painters, musicians, graphic designers, and more. We creative people are always searching for inspiration for our work, and what better way than to hear the thoughts of other creative minds? Stay tuned everyone, this should be fun :-)

Up!

On the Fourth of July, I went over to the Gaylord Texan hotel and resort to photography the fireworks from atop their parking garage. Man was that a mistake! It was kind of a last minute decision and I had no idea what was in store. By the time the fireworks started there were so many people packed onto the roof of that place that I couldn’t move at all. And to make it worse, there were people surrounding us that had no sense of personal space, they were literally leaning on my wife and she had to tell them to back up!

After the show, we headed over to the hotel and walked around inside. I’m pretty sure the inside is modeled after Alice in Wonderland, I’ll post some pictures of the place later. It’s basically a huge open space with paths winding around restaurants, shops, and photo ops. I walked to the middle of the place and looked up to see this.

My blog has two faces

Well, my business really. You may notice if you are a regular reader here that what my post may be about here is sort of like pot luck. One day I may do a post around a wedding I just shot, one day a tutorial on software I use, another a travel picture of a sunset in the Keys, and another a local family session. Well, my photography business has two sides to it: Travel and Portraits. The portrait side includes primarily weddings, but we also do families, seniors, lifestyle sessions, etc. The travel side includes all of my travel and landscape images, for which I travel the country and sometimes globe to create stunning images of wherever I go. These images will end up in art galleries, private collections of art enthusiasts, travel publications, other websites, and so on. So don’t be confused if you can’t figure out what type of blog this is! It’s simply a photography blog where I post whatever I am up to.

Marcus and Lupe | Grapevine Botanical Gardens Family Photography

A few weeks ago I got the chance to spend the evening photographing the Hodges family. I have known them through our church for a while now, and Marcus is one of the funniest guys I know. He’s a Fireman for North Richland Hills so he’s also a hero in my book. Most of the time when I’m on a shoot, I act like a dork the whole time (I know, pretty far fetched for me right) to make my subject relax and laugh. On this shoot, I think I laughed more than Marcus or Lupe (his wife)! They were absolute goofballs the entire time and I absolutely love that! Some people are really hard to loosen up, especially men. There is just something about getting your picture taken (and I understand this) that makes people very tens and nervous.

We did the entire shoot at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. I have done a few shoots here before and it’s a beautiful location for photographs. In the spring and summer everything is green, and in the fall everything is even more gorgeous with the changing colors and falling leaves. Here are some favorites from the session.
