Lauren + Daniel | Cancun Wedding Photography

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Lauren and Daniel always wanted to get married on a beach, and they made it happen. They chose to tie the knot at the Gran Caribe Real Resort right in the heart of Cancun. I thought about everything I was going to say in this post and after a while I had the thought, “Why not just let my readers hear it straight from the clients mouth!?” So enough from me already. Please welcome my client, my friend, Lauren!

Our Destination Wedding in Cancun, Mexico

Hey there fellow James Brandon Photography fans :-)

My name is Lauren Starnes and James asked me to write and share with you all what I loved about having a destination wedding and why we chose this route! So here we go… :-)

Before Daniel and I got engaged, we always talked about how wonderful it would be if we could have a wedding on a beach somewhere. Ever since I could remember, I’ve always dreamed of having a beach wedding—barefoot with our toes in the sand and sealing our vows with a kiss at sunset in front of our closest family and friends. When we started doing some research and realized how it was actually cheaper to have a wedding in Mexico than having it here in Keller, our thoughts were, “Let’s do it!!” ;) We chose the Gran Caribe Real, one of the four all-inclusive Real Resorts. I was so impressed with how easy everything was, and how stress free the entire process was. Not once did I have a bridezilla moment! That’s how simple they made everything for us!

We were assigned a wedding coordinator who kept in contact with me from October to May, answering any questions or concerns I had, and bent over backwards to make sure our wedding day was perfect. We were able to pick from several different wedding packages, which included: a decorated wedding ceremony, bouquet and boutonniere, flower petals for our flower girl, champagne for a toast after the ceremony, a semi-private wedding reception with a three course meal, a wedding cake to feed all 28 people, and a decorated suite the night of our honeymoon. WOW! And the best part was, all of that was less than $2,000. We were absolutely blown away! We originally wanted to have our ceremony right on the beach under a small tent right next to the ocean, until I started thinking of the “what ifs”. What if it rained? What if it was too hot? What if it was too windy? Like any bride, I played all sorts of different scenarios in my head and decided a beach front gazebo was the best idea. Everything turned out absolutely beautiful and better than I could have ever dreamed.

Seeing each other before the ceremony | The First Look

Daniel and I also chose to see each other before the wedding. Most people say it is bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the ceremony, but because we were only given so much time for our ceremony and reception at the resort, we wanted to make sure we had plenty of shots, before and after. James and Kristin wanted Daniel and I to be able to have time just the two of us before we took pictures with our family and friends, which made it that more intimate. They had me stand at the bottom of the stairs with my back to Daniel as he came down them to see me for the first time. When James counted to three and had me turn around to see my future husband, I’ll never forget that look in his eyes. I didn’t have to ask him what he thought of the dress, or if he thought I looked pretty. The smile on his face said it all. They were able to capture the intense, intimate moments between us before the ceremony, and the crazy, fun pictures with all of our family and friends as well. It took away all the nervous feelings I had been having for weeks and allowed me to enjoy every moment of our day, and I was able to soak it all in. I’d do it all again in a heart beat!

Our experience with James and Kristin

I wanted to tell you why we picked James Brandon Photography to do our engagement and wedding photos. As a couple and individually, James and his wife, Kristin, are two of the closest friends my husband and I have. We are so honored to know them both, and blessed to have them in our lives. They are full of energy and life and work so well together as a team. Not only did they captivate each little moment that was part of one of our most important days we’ll ever experience in our lifetime, they also captured how we are as a couple. We didn’t get the normal, traditional photos. We got memories of Daniel and I being us together- goofy, crazy, silly, and 100% madly in love with each other. -Lauren Starnes

Thanks Lauren! Destination weddings are a blast, and most of the time, they are cheaper than having a wedding in your home town! They are also more intimate, as you are usually going to invite just close friends and family (very close). And you get to tie the knot in some of the most beautiful places in the world. My wife and I are expert travelers, we’ve been to a lot of places both foreign and domestic and we know the travel regulations and how to make everything go smoothly. We are always more than happy to help answer any questions or concerns about destination weddings and the details that go with them. With that said, here are some of my favorite images from Lauren and Daniels wedding. Enjoy!

Alisha + Ben | Married!

Just finished editing this beautiful wedding from May. Alisha and Ben are an incredible couple! I actually had a Bible class back in the day with Alisha and then we had their wedding referred to us through a mutual friend. The wedding was held at First United Methodist Keller and for the reception we drove a short ways over to Watermere in Southlake. The whole wedding was an absolute blast and I can’t say enough good things about Alisha and Ben! They are both very involved with a ministry that I adore; Sower of Seeds. And they have an incredible heart to serve God and be involved in changing the world. Here is a collection of some of my favorites from the wedding. Congratulations Alisha and Ben!

Gran Caribe Real | Cancun Destination Wedding Photography

Back from Cancun

Well I’m back from a quick trip down to Cancun, Mexico for the beautiful destination wedding of Lauren and Daniel. They got married at the incredible Gran Caribe Real in a gazebo on the beach, and it was absolutely gorgeous! Brides, destination wedding are a fantastic way to get married in style, and it’s often cheaper than doing a wedding locally. Mainly because instead of inviting 200+ guests at $100+ a head, you only take about 30 or so of your closest friends and family. The end result is a beautiful, intimate wedding in paradise and some incredible wedding images on the beach to boot!

The Gran Caribe Real Before Sunset

Before getting to a quick preview of Lauren and Daniel’s wedding, I wanted to post an image of the view from our balcony at the resort. The Gran Caribe Real is right in the middle of the Cancun strip, so there’s water in front and water behind. This is obviously the west side the faces away from the ocean but still towards the bay area. I wanted to get a lot more shots during this trip of the scenery, but my 24-70 lens got moisture inside and completely fogged over! I was NOT happy!

Quick Preview of Lauren and Daniel’s Destination Wedding at Gran Caribe Real

I only have time to edit a couple images today, so here is a quick one shot preview of Lauren and Daniel. This was taken right before the ceremony. They decided (much to my delight) to see each other before the ceremony. A lot of brides are hard to convince of this new idea, but I can tell you from shooting wedding for a living that seeing each other before the ceremony is a great idea! I will do an entire post around this idea soon so stay tuned!

Leaving for Cancun Tomorrow

Today is going to be a busy day! So much do in preparation for Cancun! Charging batteries, packing equipment, packing in general, cleaning the house, answering emails, editing pictures, the list goes on and on. My wife Kristin is going to try and come along but she is flying standby and the flights are looking pretty over sold. So if you could all pray that she makes it on the flight somehow, that would be greatly appreciated! The wedding I am shooting is on the 9th and our anniversary is on the 10th, so I would prefer that we not be in different countries on our 3 year anniversary!

Gallery Night A Success!

I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came out to gallery night at Main and Vine Art Gallery!. I was there from 6-10pm and the place was packed the entire time. I got to meet a ton of new people and it was so cool to see people studying my work and trying to figure it out. I must have heard, “Wow it looks like a painting,” at least twenty times during the night! I also got to meet in person a few photographers I have only known through facebook up to this point, as well as some new photographers I had never met before at all. I plan on getting more and more involved with the local galleries around here so be looking out for more information. I may be doing some classes on photography before too long.

Ben and Alisha’s Wedding at Keller UMC

Last month I got the opportunity to shoot the wedding of Alisha and Ben Hansen at First United Methodist Church of Keller. Also known as Keller UMC, this church has an absolutely gorgeous sanctuary and is a great place to consider for a wedding in Keller, TX. The back of the sanctuary is made of huge glass windows from the ground to the ceiling with a huge wooden cross being used as a support for the entire wall. If you have a wedding here, you will likely be helped by Lisa Grelle, the Business Administrator and staff wedding coordinator. She did a fantastic job of making everything run smoothly. She is also an aspiring photographer so be looking out for her!

I actually met Alisha a number of years ago in college. We had a Bible class together she sat right by Kristin and I while we were dating. She also ironically enough went to the same church we did back in grade school. Small world huh!? So needless to say when I got this wedding referred to me by a good friend, I was pretty excited! While I am still in the process of editing this wedding, I thought I would post a few preview images here on the blog. Enjoy!

Amber and BJ | Dallas Fort Worth Wedding Photography

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Back in February I had the honor of photographing the amazing wedding of Amber and BJ at the glorious Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas. The wedding was absolutely gorgeous, thanks to Julie Eastman of Extraordinary Events & Designs. She is a tremendous talent, and I highly recommend her if you’re looking for a wedding planner in the Dallas Fort Worth area or anywhere else for that matter!

I’m pretty excited to show this slide show. We got so many good images from this wedding and it just couldn’t all fit in one song. So we did two! What you wouldn’t know without watching the video is that the wedding had a Beatles theme. How cool is that!?

Keller Texas Wedding Photography | Kari and Jon

Hillside Community Church Wedding

About a month ago I helped shoot a surprise wedding at Hillside Community Church in Keller, Texas. The surprise was for the congregation of the church because Kari and Jon actually got married during Sunday morning service! Kari and Jon were actually married before and got divorced, and through the power of God and with the support of friends, family and a marriage class at the church, the two were remarried during the marriage series at Hillside! How cool is that!? I found out I was shooting this wedding the day before it happened and the whole thing happened in about 10 minutes. I was able to meet with the family before and get some group shots, as well as a few right after the quick ceremony. We have been going to Hillside Community Church for over five years now and I am so excited to be a part of what God is doing there! Congratulations Kari and Jon, and thanks for Sushi, it was great!

Hillside Community Church is a great place for a wedding. I shot one for Steph and Noah and had a blast. The main building is literally brand new and has huge windows that let in tons of natural light during the day into the community space. I definitely think it’s one of the best places to have a wedding in Keller.

Bass Hall Wedding Photography | Amber and BJ

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

Brides, if you are looking for an amazing, classic, elegant place to get married, look no further than Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth. Bass Hall is located right across the street from one of my favorite places in the world; The Flying Saucer, in the heart of Fort Worth at Sundance Square. I have always been a fan of Bass Hall, so when Julie Eastman of Extraordinary Events and Design asked me to shoot a wedding there, I was all over it! Julie Eastman was an absolute pleasure to work with by the way, and I would highly recommend her and her team to any discerning bride who wants the best. She is a brilliant decorator and a crazy gifted planner!

MEET AMBER AND BJ

Amber and BJ (the bride and groom) are two of the coolest people I have ever met! We finally got a chance to meet about a week before the wedding (something I insist on!) and I could tell right away that it would be a fun wedding. Both of them have great personalities are very genuine! I am drawn to genuine people, and because of this we ended up talking until the coffee shop closed and they had to kick us out! The wedding was a blast and very few wedding have that much dancing, for that long! That’s why I LOVE weddings! They are massive parties where everyone is having a blast, and I am there to capture it for everyone to remember. It was a blast, and I have some great pictures from the wedding! BTW, the two of them operate a marketing company called Anchor Marketing and Design, so check them out if you are in need of marketing advice, a website, blog, etc. But not now, they are currently on a plane to sunny Cancun to honeymoon! Have fun you two!

DETAILS, DETAILS | VAN CLIBURN RECITAL HALL AND MCDAVID STUDIO

The ceremony was located in the Van Cliburn Recital Hall which is actually slightly under ground. It’s pretty cool when you walk in because while there are windows lining the walls near the ceiling, the windows are at ground level. The room is covered in genuine, dark hardwood and the room is equipped with brilliant lighting with flourishes that adorn the walls. After the ceremony we headed over to McDavid Studio for the reception. McDavid Studio is another gorgeous room that you really can’t describe without just showing an image! Below is a sneak peak of the wedding. I will post more later, just a few details for now ;-) .

Keller Wedding Photography | Stephanie and Noah

Monday, February 8th, 2010

I thought for today I would post a few more shots from Stephane and Noahs vintage style wedding at Hillside Community Church in Keller, Texas. Hillside Community Church is probably the best place to get married in Keller. They just finished a brand new building where the reception was held. The community space is lined with glass from the floor to the ceiling with rustic brick and stained concrete floors. So if you live in Keller Texas and want to get married locally instead of traveling, I highly recommend this venue!

Lantana Golf Club Photography | Michelle and Jake

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

One of the best parts of my job is the relationships my wife and I get to form with our clients. I met Jake and Michelle back in August and really got to know them while shooting their engagement session, which you can see by clicking here.  Engagement sessions and Bridal sessions aren’t just included in our wedding packages for the purpose of getting the images. They are also included because it gives us a chance to get to know each other, to get comfortable around each other. And in every case so far, to become friends! That way, come wedding day your not wondering who that guy wandering around in the background is and why he’s taking pictures of everything. If a bride doesn’t need engagements or bridals for whatever reason, I still insist that we meet with each other at least once.

Now, Jake is in the Navy, which you may have noticed by our re-make of the famous kiss in their engagement session. This wedding was very bitter sweet, because Jake was set to ship off shortly after the wedding. Fortunately they got a month or so (correct me if I’m wrong Michelle) to spend together after the wedding before he went off to serve our country. The wedding was absolutely gorgeous though. It was located at the Lantana Golf Club in Lantana Texas. Lantana Golf Club is a really fancy golf course with an even fancier club house. I was amazed at how beautiful everything was. The entire place was decorated in a rustic, old western style which was perfect. The location for the ceremony and reception was a huge room completely surrounded by glass doors that let in a TON of natural light. It was exceptionally challenging to get pictures during the ceremony because it seemed the sun was setting right on Michelle’s face! Jake had to reposition himself a few times to get the sun out of her eyes.

Let me go off on a short little tangent real quick. This is one of those lighting situations where you have to know your camera or you won’t get good pictures. The sunlight flooding in overwhelms the camera and if you don’t tell the camera what to do and where to expose (instead of setting it to automatic and hoping for the best) the pictures will be lost forever! This is one reason to spend the extra money for your wedding to get someone who knows what they are doing. Not some $400 so called wedding photographer that you found on Craigslist! I’m not trying to be mean, but this is the only wedding day this couple will have, and you don’t want to leave anything to chance. I take it very seriously!

Now where was I!? The ceremony! This ceremony was beautiful! I was really excited that all the groomsmen were wearing their Navy uniforms. It made for really slick pictures and I have the utmost respect and admiration for these men who risk their lives so I can be free and pursue a career in photography because I want to. I think that is amazing. After the ceremony, everyone went to the bar area for about 45 minutes so the staff could tear everything down and set up the reception. During that time we got some one on one time with Jake and Michelle as well as all the group shots. Afterward we had the reception, and I must say that I have never in my life seen a group of people dance for that long at a wedding! It was AWESOME! Receptions are my absolute favorite part of weddings. It’s a party and there is nothing better than a party, right? I love getting in super close to the dance floor too. Most of the time you will find me in the middle of the floor, holding the camera above my head (I’m short I know!), or getting down low to get different perspectives.

Anyways, Jake and Michelle were a blast. Thank you guys so much for letting Kristin and I be a part of your day and for the friendship we developed! You guys were amazing! And for anyone in the Argyle/Denton area, Lantana Golf Club is a great place for a wedding! And to sum it up, here are some of my favorite shots from this great wedding, enjoy!

Daily Blog Post – Noah and Stephanie: Married! | Keller and Fort Worth Wedding Photography

CONGRATULATIONS TO NOAH AND STEPHANIE GRAVELL!

I was going to do a post about a Buddhist temple I photographed yesterday, but that will have to wait until tomorrow so check back! I couldn’t contain these shots from the wedding over the weekend! As many of you already know, I had the honor of photographing my sister-in-law Stephanie’s wedding on Friday at Hillside Community Church in Keller, Texas. Steph is the little sister I never had. I have always been incredibly picky about the people she dated. I could always tell when they weren’t meant to be and if I didn’t like them, they usually knew it! Maybe I was a bit hard sometimes, but I am her big brother right, it’s my job to make sure she is with the right guy! When Noah came along I knew he was going to be different. He is great for Stephanie and they balance each other out well. I am SO happy for the two of them and I wish them the best of luck in marriage! They are currently honeymooning on some exotic beach in Mexico and I am incredibly jealous! Here are a few shots from the wedding that I decided to edit this morning. Hundreds more to go through but these were some of the best!
